Eufemia

In the early 1980s, a group of textile artists came together under the name Eufemia. The group included Brita Stranne from Falkenberg, Gitt Grännsjö-Carlsson and Lillan Berg-Hagenfeldt from Laholm, Lilian Bartholdsson and Elsa Lillieroth-Dagås from Varberg, and Ingrid Palm and Maria Wahlberg from Halmstad. Their aim was to support and inspire one another, but also to give textile art greater visibility by exhibiting together on a larger scale.
The members worked in different ways and with a variety of techniques, including pictorial weaving, appliqué, embroidery, and batik. Through their joint exhibitions, they showcased the diversity of textile art and created new contexts for their work.
Eufemia held its first group exhibition at the Museum in Halmstad (now Halland Art Museum) in 1983. Afterwards, they exhibited their work across southern Sweden, as well as in Heidelberg, Germany. The group disbanded a few years later and was largely forgotten.
The museum now highlights this chapter of Halland’s art history, in the very place where it all began.
